How Sweet and Awful is the Place

Isaac Watts, 1707
[Key: B]

Verse 1
How sweet and awful is the place
With Christ within the doors,
While everlasting love displays
The choicest of her stores!

Verse 2
Here every kindness of our God
With soft compassion rolls;
Here peace and pardon bought with blood
Is food for dying souls.

Verse 3
While all our hearts and all our songs
Join to admire the feast,
Each of us cry, with thankful tongues,
“Lord, why was I a guest?

Verse 4
“Why was I made to hear Thy voice,
And enter while there’s room,
When thousands make a wretched choice,
And rather starve than come?”

Verse 5
‘Twas the same love that spread the feast
That sweetly drew us in;
Else we had still refused to taste,
And perished in our sin.

Verse 6
Pity the nations, O our God!
Constrain the earth to come;
Send Thy victorious Word abroad,
And bring the strangers home.

Verse 7
We long to see Thy churches full,
That all the chosen race
May with one voice, and heart and soul,
Sing Thy redeeming grace.

Come Thou Almighty King

Charles Wesley, 1757
[Key: Db]

Verse 1
Come, Thou Almighty King,
Help us Thy Name to sing,
Help us to praise!
Father all glorious,
O’er all victorious,
Come and reign over us,
Ancient of Days!

Verse 2
Jesus, our Lord, arise,
Scatter our enemies,
And make them fall;
Let Thine almighty aid
Our sure defense be made,
Souls on Thee be stayed;
Lord, hear our call.

Verse 3
Come, Thou Incarnate Word,
Gird on Thy mighty sword,
Our prayer attend!
Come, and Thy people bless,
And give Thy Word success,
Spirit of holiness,
On us descend!

Verse 4
Come, Holy Comforter,
Thy sacred witness bear
In this glad hour.
Thou Who almighty art,
Now rule in every heart,
And ne’er from us depart,
Spirit of Power!

Verse 5
To Thee, great One in Three,
Eternal praises be,
Hence, evermore.
Thy sovereign majesty
May we in glory see,
And to eternity love and adore!

Christ Shall Have Dominion

The Psalter
From Psalm 72, 1912
[Key: B]

Verse 1
Christ shall have dominion Over land and sea,
Earth’s remotest regions shall His empire be;
They that wilds inhabit shall their worship bring,
Kings shall render tribute, nations serve our King.
Christ shall have dominion, over land and sea,
Earth’s remotest regions shall His empire be.

Verse 2
When the needy seek Him, He will mercy show;
Yea, the weak and helpless shall His pity know;
He will surely save them from oppression’s might,
For their lives are precious in His holy sight.
Christ shall have dominion, over land and sea,
Earth’s remotest regions shall His empire be.

Verse 3
Ever and forever shall His Name endure;
Long as suns continue it shall stand secure;
And in Him forever all men shall be blest,
And all nations hail Him King of kings confessed.
Christ shall have dominion, over land and sea,
Earth’s remotest regions shall His empire be.

Verse 4
Unto God Almighty joyful Zion sings;
He alone is glorious, doing wondrous things.
Evermore, ye people, bless His glorious Name,
His eternal glory through the earth proclaim.
Christ shall have dominion, over land and sea,
Earth’s remotest regions shall His empire be.

Jesus Saves (New)

Moffitt, Cottrell, and Smith
[Key: Db]

Verse 1
Hear the heart of Heaven beating:
Jesus saves, Jesus saves!
Hear His love and mercy pleading:
Jesus saves, Jesus saves!
Hear the host of angels sing,
“Glory to our Risen King!”
And the sounding joy repeating:
Jesus saves!

Verse 2
He has died our burden bearing.
Jesus saves, Jesus saves!
He now lives our sorrows sharing.
Jesus saves, Jesus saves!
See His love shine in the cross
Christ has paid redemption’s cost!
And the empty tomb’s declaring:
Jesus saves!

Verse 3
Sin’s dark power now is broken.
Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
“It is finished!” He has spoken.
Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
See the Christ all full of grace,
Melting darkness in His wake.
He’s alive forevermore!
Jesus saves!

Bridge
Christ is calling, chains are falling,
Hope is dawning bright and true.
Day is breaking, darkness failing,
God is making all things new.
Jesus saves!

Verse 4
O to grace, how great a debtor!
Jesus saves, Jesus saves!
All the saints now shout together!
Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
Turn and know the risen Christ,
The spotless Lamb, our Sacrifice!
And we’ll sing His song forever:
Jesus saves!

Turn and know the risen Christ,
The spotless Lamb, our Sacrifice!
And we’ll sing His song forever:
Jesus saves!

Jesus Saves

Priscilla J. Owens
[Key: D]

Verse 1
We have heard the joyful sound:
Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
Spread the tidings all around:
Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
Bear the news to every land,
Climb the mountains, cross the waves;
Onward! ’tis our Lord’s command;
Jesus saves! Jesus saves!

Verse 2
Waft it on the rolling tide:
Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
Tell to sinners far and wide:
Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
Sing, you islands of the sea;
Echo back, you ocean caves;
Earth shall keep her jubilee:
Jesus saves! Jesus saves!

Verse 3
Sing above the battle strife:
Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
By His death and endless life,
Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
Shout it brightly through the gloom,
When the heart for mercy craves;
Sing in triumph o’er the tomb:
Jesus saves! Jesus saves!

Verse 4
Give the winds a mighty voice:
Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
Let the nations now rejoice:
Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
Shout salvation full and free;
Highest hills and deepest caves;
This our song of victory:
Jesus saves! Jesus saves!

He Who Would Valiant Be

John Bunyan
[Key: B]

Verse 1
He who would valiant be
‘Gainst all disaster
Let him in constancy
Follow the Master
There’s no discouragement
Shall make him once relent
His first avowed intent
To be a pilgrim.

Verse 2
Who so beset him round
With dismal stories,
Do but themselves confound —
His strength the more is.
No foes shall stay his might,
Though he with giants fight:
He will make good his right
To be a pilgrim.

Verse 3
Since, Lord, Thou doest defend
Us with Thy Spirit,
We know we at the end
Shall life inherit.
Then fancies flee away!
I’ll fear not what men say,
I’ll labor night and day
To be a pilgrim.

Brethren We Have Met to Worship

George Atkins, 1819
[Key: D]

Verse 1
Brethren we have met to worship,
And adore the Lord our God;
Will you pray with all your power,
While we try to preach the Word?
All is vain unless the Spirit
Of the Holy One comes down
Brethren, pray, & holy manna
Will be showered all around.

Verse 2
[Sisters]
Brethren see poor sinners round you
Slumbering on the brink of woe;
Death is coming, hell is moving,
Can you bear to let them go?
See our fathers and our mothers
And our children sinking down!
Brethren, pray and holy manna
will be showered all around.

Verse 3
[Brothers]
Sisters, will you join and help us?
Moses’ sister aided him;
Will you help the trembling mourners
Who are struggling hard with sin?
Tell them all about the Savior
Tell them that He will be found!
Sisters, pray, and holy manna
Will be showered all around.

Verse 4
Let us love our God supremely,
Let us love each other, too;
Let us love and pray for sinners,
‘Till our God makes all things new.
Then He’ll call us home to Heaven
At His table we’ll sit down.
Christ will gird Himself and serve us
With sweet manna all around.

Battle Hymn of the Church

Julia Ward Howe, 1861
[Key: F#]

Verse 1
Mine eyes have seen the glory
Of the coming of the Lord,
He is trampling out the vintage
Where the grapes of wrath are stored;
He hath loosed the fateful lightning
Of His terrible swift sword;
His truth is marching on!

Chorus
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
His truth is marching on!

Verse 2
“I have breath’d the fiery Gospel…
I in My Son’s blood did seal”;
“As I deal with My Annointed,
So with you My grace shall deal”;
Let our Hero, born of woman,
Crush the serpent with His heel,
Since God is marching on!

Chorus
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
His truth is marching on!

Verse 3
He has sounded forth the trumpet
That shall never call retreat;
He is sifting out the hearts of men
Before His judgment seat;
Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him!
Be jubilant, my feet;
Our God is marching on!

Chorus
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
His truth is marching on!

Verse 4
In the beauty of the lilies
Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in His bosom
That transfigures you and me:
As He died to make men holy,
Let us live to make men free;
While God is marching on!

Chorus
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
His truth is marching on!

Verse 5
He is coming like the glory
Of the morning on the wave,
He is Wisdom to the mighty,
He is Honor to the brave;
So the world shall be His footstool,
And the soul of wrong His slave,
Our God is marching on!

Chorus
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
His truth is marching on!

Conquering Now and Still to Conquer

Fanny J. Crosby, 1890
[Key: F]

Verse 1
Conquering now and still to conquer,
Rideth a King in His might;
Leading the host of all the faithful
Into the midst of the fight;
See them with courage advancing,
Clad in their brilliant array,
Shouting the Name of their Leader,
Hear them exultingly say:

Chorus
Not to the strong is the battle,
Not to the swift is the race,
Yet to the true and the faithful
Vict’ry is promised through grace.

Verse 2
Conquering now and still to conquer,
Who is this wonderful King?
Whence are the armies which He leadeth,
While of His glory they sing?
He is our Lord and Redeemer,
Savior and Monarch divine;
They are the stars that forever
Bright in His kingdom shall shine.

Chorus
Not to the strong is the battle,
Not to the swift is the race,
Yet to the true and the faithful
Vict’ry is promised through grace.

Verse 3
Conquering now and still to conquer,
Jesus, Thou Ruler of all,
Thrones and their scepters all shall perish,
Crowns and their splendor shall fall,
Yet shall the armies Thou leadest,
Faithful and true to the last,
Find in Thy mansions eternal
Rest, when their warfare is past.

Chorus
Not to the strong is the battle,
Not to the swift is the race,
Yet to the true and the faithful
Vict’ry is promised through grace.

Am I a Soldier of the Cross?

Isaac Watts
[Key: Bb Minor]

Verse 1
Am I a soldier of the cross,
A follower of the Lamb,
And shall I fear to own His cause,
Or blush to speak His Name?
Must I be carried to the skies
On a flowery bed of ease,
While others fought to win the prize,
And sailed through bloody seas?

Verse 2
Are there no foes for me to face?
Must I not stem the flood?
Is this vile world a friend to grace,
To help me on to God?
Sure I must fight if I would reign;
Increase my courage, Lord.
I’ll bear the toil, endure the pain,
Supported by Thy Word.

Verse 3
Thy saints in all this glorious war
Shall conquer, though they die;
They see the triumph from afar,
By faith’s discerning eye.
When that illustrious day shall rise,
And all Thy armies shine
In robes of victory through the skies,
The glory shall be Thine.
